You know, I'm glad this drama has helped Wu Jinyan's career. I know people have ~feelings~ about her acting, but she's gotten so much flack for it that I can't help but root for her. She really needed this, since her other dramas since Yanxi Palace have kind of flopped. I just hate that this success means that Yu Zheng is benefiting lol

Not Bad Kids level indeed, but still better than many of 2024 releases and I agree with the others that it is also one of the better Light On series. We need short, good dramas more, not idol dramas.

My review on your review: it felt like you were trying very hard to point out the faults in the drama😂 I won't agree that there was no tension built up between leads until the episode 10. From the very first scene when they find a culprit with female leads help it started. It showed he was getting interested in her. They both portrayed their characters very well. Wu lei's eye acting❤ the way his gaze softens when he looks at her. And his mature acting at the age of 20/21 is like wow. Only point I can agree is that the emperor's character is not believable. Though we liked him in the story, it's not a believable character. I have to say, this is the best period drama I have ever watched.

I’m a Chinese descendant living outside China so I’m speaking from an outsider’s perspective. I found this drama clearly reflects the traditional Confucius value of male leading female and expectation to get a naive, innocent and inexperienced young woman to be the ‘wife-material’. All major decisions were made by the ML without consulting with the FL. He provides and she receives and accepts it. The end of the story. Although it seems sweet and dreamy at the facade, this would likely not work in reality in the modern setting. On the other hand, one could say we watch any entertainment to get away from reality so of course this series could get away with this reason. Not my cup of tea though. It could be a break for the actors from filming dramatic series but it is also clearly a fan-service production harvesting from Tan Jian Ci’s recent fame. A waste of talented actors and their times.

Would people be praising this without Duke Su or if they had replaced Wang Xingyue with Chang Chen?

Was looking forward for Jun for Anle and Foxspirit but what a letdown considering 2 of the biggest stars are alongside him. It is a good thing though that real actors are casted by newbie and small time producers giving chances to deserving talents other than those traffic awkward and plain visual actors. The double is a breakout drama in '24 and hopefully. Watched few episodes of Jades Fateful love and it was quite interesting at the start but they added those silly stuff which is degrading and the ML is obviously awkward anf still not ready for a lead role. The FL aside from being a star quality material, had huge acting growth potential. Hope to see her in a proper drama in the near future.

Is this a sign for me to go check out Joy of Life past episode 6? Because I have tried really hard to stomach the first 6, completely and blind-sidedly disappointed in how in all the sense of everything logical, this is a drama produced and written by the same team as season 1. The amount of insatiable jokes that absolutely didn't land, emotional moments that they tried to hard to shoved in our faces but didn't even scratch the itch. I guess they were trying to replicate the beauty of Teng Zijing & Fan Xian's dynamic and his overall impact on the story and failed miserably. The characters that we learn to love and love to hate became a caricature of themselves (Second Prince, Third Prince : GUILTY as charged), even the emperor and Chen Pingping almost became the satire version of a once very nuance roles. I adore Joy of Life season one because of its self awareness. No matter how serious and demanding the narrative gets, it never once lost its sight of being a story and try to be bigger than what it essentially is. Season one was one of the most well-written, quick-witted and smartest stories out there, but not once did it felt condescending. It excelled in subtlety. How the narrative drove the moral inspirations of each characters were done with such delicacy resulted in a very compelling and impactful storytelling. Season one was the type of story you think about long after it ends. Season 2, at least from what I've seen, just isn't. Or maybe I just get older, after all it's been 4 years.

I finally got to the CGI part and 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I just let out the loudest cackle of my life at 2AM. It's so ridiculous you just have to laugh and move on.

I think it’s a mistake to compare it to The Bad Kids. I don’t think that was ever the production or iQiyi’s intention to recreate another Bad Kids. Maybe they intend to have the drama do well, but not a Bad Kids 2.0. So having that expectation is already a mistake. I thoroughly enjoyed this drama from beginning till the end. If you follow the discussions on other platforms, you’d see a lot of ppl actually having very lively discussions abt the plot. The drama is only 16 eps. I’d say it’s one of the better Light On dramas in recent years. It’s not on Bad Kids level but it’s still a gripping drama. I do agree abt the color grading. They really didn’t have to put up such a strong yellowish filter and make everyone look 3 tones darker than they really are. Also the actress who played the mom is AMAZING.

As a fan of mystery dramas and thrillers, I loved it. The best in the category of the year, so far, and one of the best hits from Lights On Series in recent releases, which has been making one mistake after another. But I agree with you, 2024 is being a very weak year for Chinese dramas, and we are already halfway through the year.

I have never heard about the novel before watching this. No idea that the Got guys were doing it neither. I've seen so many shows and when people complain about something not being well written or acted, I normally roll my eyes. But this is incredibly bad for all the reasons you stated. I felt so disconnected from thesevcharacters. I was really frustrated with the portrayal of the scientists....the CGI....the dialog. But the premise was soooo interesting that I managed to get to the final episode. Going to get the books now.

I watch half ep 1. Then watch ending half of last episode to see if it's worth my time investing in. Nope. I then goes to middle episode thinking well it's Yang Mi, so maybe it'll pick up pace & gets better. Nope 👎 nope 👎 nope 🙂‍↔️ 😂

I liked the drama and I mostly loved the bond of the brothers❣️ Ending was good only if it has a season 2 otherwise it will be really disappointing. They were speaking so slowly and precisely it did sound fake and rehearsed…I actually agree in most of everything you said I laughed at the fight scene in the air it lasted so long… Lol

The people saying the CGI is ridiculous obviously do not get that scene. It was simply a visual effect for you guys to understand the emotions and story her music is conveying. It's not like they suddenly learned magic or anything. Those emotions are hard to produce just from listening alone. It was to tell the viewers that hey this is what everyon feels and understood while our fl was playing qin.

General comment/observation/question regarding chinese dramas is whether it is common for directors and producers to have the female lead's voice intentionally sound so cute + gentle and dumb at the same time. I believe it's a trope to have the female lead appear appear cute and dumb, but my observation is that it is much more pronounced in the Chinese dramas that I have seen. Even taking into account the character of little orchid, I found her character very difficult to like in the first 10 episodes because her voice was so difficult to tolerate with her intonations, the extent to which her voice was so high pitched, and the way her sentences were structured. It was almost impossible to dismiss and enjoy the show because it was so exaggerated and sounded like she was whining the entire time. It's as if the producers don't think the character would be believable unless she sounded dumb. If you can understand chinese, you know that very rarely do people ever speak in these types of tones or manners and it's mostly when children or people want to get their way when they engage in a type of voice that is "sa jiao". Yes, it's fantasy drama so it should not need to reflect real life, but her voice dubbing was over the top and the story would have done much better for me if she had not spoken in such a childish way. After the first ten episodes the show became immensely more enjoyable because of the body switches and her voice would sound less exaggerated because she had more scenes in various settings. The highlight for me was Dylan Wang's performance and the storylines of the other supporting characters.

Lol, the only dramas i'm rewatching during my summer break so far is the spireealm, mysterious lotus casebook, the donghua's heave official blessing, and thousand autumns!

The first 4-5 episodes look promising, but in the end the drama promised more than it could delivered. Overall it’s slow and flat, especially when you watch this alongside the fast paced The Double. As a suspense thriller, it has its moment but overall you really couldn’t be bothered with solving the puzzle.

Really loving Tale of Rose so far, but I can't say that will be THE drama of 2024. It has its issues. But really enjoying it. (I'm a sucker for love stories ;) )

😭😭all those flashbacks for what They kinda just brushed over the human trafficking part too They never even investigated Seven's identity and i thought Seven was going to be discovered as the detective's son. That's the vibe i got from it. 😔i was so excited to watch this but oh well🚶‍♀️

I agree honey, watched about 3 episodes somehow and dropped it asap. Gong jun's acting has gotten so bad. And I feel the same with Yang mi. I don't find any chemistry between them at all. The only drama that I watched by gong Jun that I genuinely like is Begin Again. After that, man just declined until word of honour that is.

Very disappointing to hear especially since I was hoping to watch another riveting drama with Zhang Song Wen in it:( So far for me THE DRAMA OF 2024 has been only TENDER LIGHT. Minus the ending I found everything else spell binding including the acting, chemistry (LOVED THE ROMANCE and a brooding Steven Zhang), direction, cinematography. Have you checked out that drama yet?

Among the Light on series that I watched, The long night is the best one imo. I haven't watched Bad kids, started but dropped. I liked this one but even if its only 16 ep, it felt too long. By 70-75% of drama (i forgot ep count) 100% of story had unfolded and just needed a solution and ending. But it kept going on for another few episodes. That's not what I expect from crime/ mystery dramas atleast. And this is same for Tell no one. Short drama that felt too long. About the ending, it needed a bit more like giving some hope or clue to find the missing boy. Also what is it about this yellow filter??? Was the world suffering from jaundice in the 90s'? Some part of flashback with Yellow filter is fine, but the whole drama.. too much. Same thing happening in Tale of Rose.

What about "The storm chaser "? Nothing in it impressed you?😊

Love this drama, my 2024`s favorite drama so far, actually one of my favorite ever. It shows such a crucial moment in China`s History. Qin Junjie (first time I watch his work) is amazing as Muqing.

I’m a professional classical musician…and the music competition is really like the big music competitions…there are hinky judges and judges who favor their (former) students and then there is the judge who is honest and true (who they ignore). The CGI was a little over the top but I like the idea that they wanted to convey that the music told a story in such a powerful way that the audience could experience and understand the story. One of the reasons that the Four Seasons by Vivaldi is so loved is that it has very specific renderings of what happens in the seasons (birds in Spring, people slip on ice in Winter, etc…and in fact these comments were put in the score by Vivaldi himself). All great music works are actually telling a very human story of some kind…that is why they are so deeply felt.
